Flying Etiquette

This is a reminder that flying etiquette is to be observed by all pilots when flying at our Tharwa and Williamsdale flying fields.

General – Applies to all flyers

  • Most club members now operate 2.4GHz radio systems and do not require transmission coordination. However operations on 36MHz are permitted and in such cases the frequency board must be used.

Fixed Wing

  • No flying behind the pilots box to ensure compliance with our MAAA Area Approval and CASA 101 30 meter rule.
  • Do not walk across the runway when other pilots are flying unless you have checked and confirmed with those pilots that it is safe to do so.
  • Give audible verbal notice to other pilots to request permission for take-off (eg. call “OK for take off”) and wait for clearance from other pilots.
  • Give audible verbal notice to other pilots to announce when engine out (eg. Call “dead stick”). Dead stick landings have priority over take offs and landings.
  • Give audible verbal notice to other pilots to announce when landing (eg. Call “Landing”).
  • Fly a predictable circuit. When take-off is to the north fly in an anti-clockwise circuit; when take-off is to the south then fly a clockwise circuit.
  • Do not perform aerobatics over the runway or in the circuit when other pilots are flying.
  • Fixed wing pilots wishing to perform 3D manoeuvres over the runway may do so if the airspace is clear and other pilots are OK with it.
  • When flying a glider over the strip or in the circuit at the same height as other pilots are flying, then  they are to fly in the same circuit as other aircraft.
  • When flying FPV you must fly with a spotter/observer to comply with MAAA MOPs and CASA 101.

Rotary Wing

  • Do not walk into the take-off/landing area when other pilots are flying unless you have checked and confirmed with pilots that it is safe to do so.
  • If the airspace is clear, rotary models can be flown over the runway if fixed wing pilots are OK with it (Tharwa).
  • Rotary aircraft can be flown alongside glider pilots, if the glider pilots are OK with it.
  • Flying of large powered models (600 sized helicopters or larger) is only permitted between 10:00am and 1:30pm on Sundays and Wednesdays (Williamsdale).
  • Flying of smaller electric only models permitted outside the above times.
  • For the amenity of local residents, flying of models before 9:00am is discouraged (Williamsdale).
  • Helicopter pilots are to clear take offs with other pilots before flying.
