Friday June 2nd saw an “Infection” of Tomboys floating around the skies at Tharwa again but this time it was the 48″ Tomboys and they were flying in the Italian sponsored international Tomboy contest (see the previous post on this).
The competition field was larger with Greg Lance, Allan Laycock, Fred Burman and Bob Raadts all making successful flights and Glen Newbown was chief (only) timer. Glen decided that he could rest on his laurels after a successful flight a couple of weeks earlier.
Here is Glen’s report on the day’s Tomboy flying:
Glen Newbown, 02 Jun 2302/06/23
Allan Laycock – 6 minutes, 4 seconds (12.20pm) Electric 48” w/s with 2 minute engine run on 1,000 mah 3s lipo (not quite as per the Italian rules, but we couldn’t get hold of the required smaller battery size, so thought 2 minutes was a fair compromise).
Greg Lance – 6:07 – same as above, but flown probably ten minutes earlier by memory.
Bob Raadts – 7:46. Flown at 12.30 pm, using the same Laycock lightweight “weapon”
Fred Burman – 6:22 flown at 12.10 around the same time as Greg. This was again his diesel powered model, however, and his best time to date.
(I didn’t put in a timed flight as, apart from doing a lot of the timing today, I’m still resting on my laurels and recovering from my eight minute plus flight in March – aided by a nice fat thermal which seemed non-existent today. I’m sure the lads will be keen to fly again before the end June cut-off and hope for some thermal assistance.)
NB – I do like that Gary has now come up with a collective term for the wee beasties – an “infection” of Tomboys. Probably kinder than a “Pestilence”, eh?
On this front, I’ve just had a text from Ray Terry asking for Tomboy plans – seems he’s also keen to build one. I’ve suggested he gets hold of Allan’s 1.5 x scaled up plans, as it seems the best floater of all so far. Yet to hear back from him.
Cheers,
Glen.
