… Allan wrote to the US to show he’s ready for next year …
Hi guys,
The Aussies now have a second new weapon – a “Duster”. It is on Outerzone.
It only needs gear and we are ready to go in September.Regards from Oz,
Allan

from Glen to Allan …
Glen to Allan 12/06/23Interesting to see those results, Allan – I didn’t hold the Ozzy end up with a second last effort, but what was that mention of a 10 minute max in the rules? Doesn’t that mean the winner went over that max by more than 22 minutes and hence you, who were canny enough to come down a bit under the max, should have taken the honours?
Or does it just mean that Mike could have saved himself a lot of effort and come down at the 10 minute mark, and that any subsequent time airborne doesn’t count against him?
Thanks for the loan of the little 36” Tomboy, but pity Fred didn’t manage to get a flight or two in with the Courtesan. Maybe next year we’ll have a few more bods from our club have a go. I’ve not flown before in an International comp (apart from the ongoing Italian job) but found it to be a nice relaxed way to go.
Perhaps the losing country should offer to host the winners at one of our famous snag bbq’s?
Cheers,
Glen.

Bob to Allan et al 12/06/23Here are the results, I think I have them all, if I missed any please send them to me. Next time we can do a September event and have pretty good weather around the hemispheres. I will have this posted on the SAM Website after I see if there are any errors.

Updated 04 Jun 2023 (the latest email is at the top so read from the bottom up):
Email from Michael McIntyre to Allan 04 Jun 23The Geef 250 is a nice design because of the wide cord.
Able to see that plane at a good altitude compaired with the outer 36″ span planes?
Allan,
It was a very tricky flight to get that time of over 32 minutes.
Glen lost sight of the plane more than I did! (luckily, I never did).
I was at one time so far up all I saw was a dot ( . )—- just that big! ) and I put the end of the antenna on it to see which way it went from the end of the antenna.
While trying to come down, a flock of ducks were circling where my plane was.
Glen as me where I was, and I told him, with the duck circling with me and I wasn’t circling with the full down stick (for a while).
He still couldn’t find (see) the plane?
Over ½ the flight I had full down stick as Glen reduce the throws on the rudder and elevator to make the Baby Buzzard less sensitive.
We now know that may have been a mistake?
By the time it was low enough for both Glen and I to see, my hands were shaking (a little) as it took some time to get it low enough to see it (comfortably).
I haven’t gotten a plane that high in years (ok SAM Champs 2018).
And those little 36″ planes get small somewhat quick on a 2-minute run (if light enough)?
As for the weather, May was the 2nd driest for the Chicago area. We only received .48 of an inch of rain for the month, when normally we should receive over 4 inches of rain for the month. Driest May is/was .42 of an inch.
Hot — Dry — Dusty — smoky/hazy conditions for dust devils/thermals and it is continues now in the 1st week of June in the area.
Regards,
M. McIntyre
Allan to Michael McIntyre 03 Jun 23:
Above email from Allan 03 Jun 23Hi Mike and all,
Are you sure you didn’t just forget to turn the watch off and remembered to do so after 30 minutes??? Well done you if you didn’t. See I told you it was thermals and warm weather that allowed you to fly longer in Chicago than in winter in Canberra.
I sent a piccy and the Results to Bob Galler. I have been building another E 36” replica so we will have 3 models if there is another Postal by Bob and Steve. It needs enlarging from 28” to 36”. A thing called a Duster (it is on Outerzone) you might like it. But I think the Geef 250 will be better.
We have been putting flights for the Italian Postal Tomboy Challenge and flew some E Tomboy Seniors. Surprisingly all with about the same times on a 2 minute motor run. We cannot get the right sized battery 3S 650 mah here in Oz so we decided on 2 minutes with any 3S. Piccy of the boyz soonish.
Regards from Oz,
Allan
Email from Glen to Allan 32 May 23Wow – Nearly 32 and a half minute fight with a Baby Buzzard, with the rest mostly 5 minutes plus. I was battling to do 3 or 4 by memory & even Allan’s boomer didn’t come close, though I’m sure his best was good for second.
I think overall the Yanks have it over the lads from Oz, but maybe assisted by warm air from the Canadian wildfires. We needed you, Fred, to take it up to them.
Cheers,
Glen (Oz)
Original post from 28 May 23:
3 of our club members have entered an international old-timer models contest run by SAM100. The contest called SAM 100 /ASA e36″ Replica Postal Contest is for 36 inch replica old-timers and runs from May 22nd to May 30th.
The local results for the NSFC members as at May 28th are:
Position | Entrant | Model | Flight Time |
1 | Allan Laycock | Geef250 | 10m 25s |
2 | Glen Newbown | Tomboy 36 | 07m 22s |
3 | Fred Burman | Courtesan | No time recorded |
Allan’s Full Report:
So that was the plan and a few of the guys from SAM 83 accepted the challenge here in wintry Australia. The fliers were Glen Newbown (Tomboy), Fred Burman (Courtesan – another Smeed design) and Allan Laycock (Geef 250) only Glen and Allan flew on Sunday 28 May 2023. The weather had not been kind with most days previously with winds over 25kph or 20 mph and rain on some days as well. We tried for a flight last Wednesday but the fog had not lifted by lunch-time so we abandoned the attempt. On Sunday there was an early heavy frost and the thermometer was below zero with very high cloud and thankfully little wind. By 10.30 am and fortified by a sausage sandwich – The Namadgi Sport Fliers Club put on what is known as a ‘Sausage Sizzle’ on the last Sunday of the month for members and guests and that was today. As you electric guys will be aware Li-po batteries don’t like the cold and Glen’s model certainly showed such effects. Glen made two flights at 10.40 and 11.10am with times of 3.26 and 3.56 for a total time of 7.22. Allan flew at 10.30 and 10.50 with times of 3.20 and 7.05 and a total of 10.25. For Allan this was only the second and third flights of this new model and Glen had only flown the Tomboy model for a test fly last week.
A little more latitude with timing might have been better for us downunder.
Michael McIntyre reports from the US:
Hello all,
Jack flew Glen’s Sniffer this morning for his official flight a little before 8:00am.
Sky was cloudy with some sun and the temperature was about 63°.
Glen and I were there to watch Jack make his official flight. Nothing great as it was early in the morning.
Jack took a pass on his 2nd flight as he said it would be about the same.
Glen did fly his Baby Buzard Bombshell for two flights to see if his times would have been better than the ones, he had with the 36″ Tomboy.
Flight times were not that much different from the Tomboy compared to the Baby Buzzard.
But the Tomboy times will be the ones scored (officially – by the official – me) as I was score keeper.
So, Allan
The photo you sent looks to us like a nice warm fall day here?
Wonder if you get this light fluffy cold stuff?
M. McIntyre
… Bob Galler adds:
Richard and I flying at sod farm tomorrow with expected light winds finally. We cancelled Friday due to wind. Glad you flew. I forgot Australia is winter now but Alan flew anyway. Fun.
(…)
Allan great enthusiasm. Forgot you are heading into winter. Loved photos and effort.
Bob
