Hello everyone,
We have received our MAAA certificate of currency for our flying height increase to 1500ft AGL.
If you’ve heard any of the discussion about the MAAA Area Approval process you probably know that there are a specific set of restrictions and conditions which are applied to Area Approvals. You can read all the details in the various MOPs (MOP001, MOP004, MOP019, MOP067).
In the case of our area approval for a flying height of 1500f AGL we should all be aware of the following points:
- Know your current flying height, whether through onboard telemetry or by reference to other models flying nearby which have telemetry.
- above 400ft AGL but <1000ft AGL it is desirable to have an observer on the flightline (ir. in pilots box) and, if possible, an airband radio. These are not mandatory requirements.
- above 1000ft AGL and upto 1500ft AGL there must be an observer on the flight line (ie. in pilots box) and it is desirable but not mandatory to have an airband radio. The observer is to look out for full size aircraft operating in the area.
- if full size aircraft come in to the flying area of your model then you should land until the full size aircraft has moved out of the flying area.

As you can see the Area Approval is valid for 12 months. Renewal through the MAAA should now be a relatively straightforward process.
Happy flying everyone.
