We have had a problem at our Tharwa Flying Field recently with animals (sheep most recently) getting into our flying field and the car park.
Recently, early arrivals for flying have found not only the animals but also that the electric fence has not been correctly restored and, on some occasions, the club house has been left unlocked.
So what should you do when you are the last person at the field?
- reconnect the electric fence across the strip making sure that the wires are not twisted
- install the 4 posts across the strip which keep the fence wires separated. This is important because if the wires touch the ground or each other they will short the fence out and the entire fence will not work.
- make sure no one has disconnected the main fence wire at the container and turn the power switch on the container back on
- secure the club house, this is easy because you only have to shut the door which will lock automatically. There is no need to lock the door with a key, just ensure it has closed securely.
- put the chain around the gate from the car park into the flying field and secure it with the padlock. Make sure you have twirled the tumblers so that the padlock is definitely locked.
- lastly, put the chain around the gate from the road into the car park and secure it with the padlock then twirl the tumblers.
Don’t disconnect the electric fence from the container, there is a switch on the side of the container which makes it very easy to turn the power to the fence off or on.
I know you’re all thinking that this is all pretty much in the grandma and eggs category of posts but we’re trying to keep our field as clean and secure as possible and at the same time prevent any of the farmer’s animals from getting out on to the road so your help with this would be appreciated.
