Another COVID Project

Learning how to use my DIY CNC Router. The goal was to build a router that I can use to cut plywood and balsa parts. I worked up the dimensions for the Router’s MDF frame from pictures on the internet. This is a test run cutting a fuselage rib for a flying wing that Clem is helping me with. I am cutting slow and shallow as I learn the capabilities of the router. Each cut on this piece is 0.5mm, so it took 5 passes and about 15 minutes to complete. Learning the CAD software is a challenge. Thanks to big Dave for help with parts and advice. More fun to come. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQk9k5zZWdI

    1. Thanks Jeremy. The approximate cutting size is 350x750x75. The 2mm bits I am using at the moment allow me to cut to a depth of 17mm, but the deepest I have cut so far is 3mm, albeit at 0.5mm per pass. I am still coming to grips with the required techniques, having cut only a dozen pieces so far. Balsa is easy, as you would expect. Plywood is more challenging, with plenty of opportunity for hairy edges, depending upon speed, depth and tool type. I have to go even slower with aluminium to avoid chattering and cratering. I hope to try 3D foam mould cutting when I find the right cutter bits.

    1. Cloning my much-loved Mini Ultra Stick and making parts for my Deuces Wild rebuild are the only thoughts at the moment. In reality, I could hand-make those parts quicker, but I am attracted by the precision and repeatability of the CNC method. I also like new toys!
