I’ve been scanning some old slides we found which date from the 1970s and 1980s. Amongst the slides were pics of some flying events in Albury, the first was at Drage’s Aircraft Museum (now defunct). Joe Drage was keen pilot and an avid collector and restorer of vintage aircraft who, up until the early 1980s, had an annual vintage aircraft fly-in. The other pictures are from “Flying High” a fly-in based at Albury airport which ran for a couple of years from 1979. Anyway I thought some of the pics might be interesting to others in the club …
Apologies for the photo quality, the scans were from slides which were about 40 years old and some of the dyes had started to fade and there is only so much that can be done with with limited photo editing facilities (and limited patience).
Hi Neil, the unknown aircraft is a VOLKSPLANE, a homebuit with VW motor, very cheap to build and flew well.
Hi Frank, thanks for the information. I looked up the registration number VH-DIK but the earliest reference I could find was from 1983 when that was the registration number for Dick Smith’s Bell Jetranger helicopter.
An interesting bunch of aircraft. That was a good little museum, pity it closed.
From what I’ve read it was a case of the Wodonga Council rezoning Drage’s farm for housing. The museum moved to Wangaratta for a number of years but eventually closed altogether and the aircraft sold off. Joe Drage died in Aug 2017 at the age of 86.
Thanks for putting these photos up Neil, a great assortment indeed.
Regards, Trevor
